One of the ways I help leaders reclaim their time is through delegation.
Many leaders come to me saying they feel guilty giving tasks to their team because of a set of common reasons. Those reasons sound like:
They have a lot on their plate.
I know I’ve already given them too many tasks.
I shouldn’t be giving more, I should be doing more.
Now - some of these beliefs may also be factual. You may be working with team members who are telling you they are burnt out. That’s very valid.
And - you may also be believing storylines that aren’t true.
The first step is to write down everything that creates the feeling of guilt about delegation for you.
Then look to see if any of those statements are assumptions you’re making.
For example, maybe you believe, “This person isn’t going to want to do the task.”
Are you sure? Or are you deciding ahead of time for them?
If you find an assumption, then you can change it.
The second piece of this work is understanding that guilt is probably distracting you from other feelings.
Guilt is often in our heads, a place where our brain circles around and around.
It’s not actually a feeling that gets processed in the body and then let go.
So my second question for you is - what am I distracting myself from when I’m feeling guilty about delegation?
I could be distracting myself from other topics I don't want to deal with, like the actual work on my plate. I might be distracting myself from things that are happening at home or what's going on in the world right now. All sorts of things.
When I notice I’m distracting myself, then I can shift to the actual feelings that need to be processed.
That's just one piece of the workshop that I give to leaders. Please reach out if you're interested in having me speak to your organization.
And share in the comments what comes up for you to help each other!
