The Art of Repetition: Why I Embrace the Same Topics in Coaching

I was just coaching a 1:1 client who said she almost didn’t get on the call.

She was feeling shame from thinking, “I’m still having the same struggle.”

I’ve coached clients for years who have said similar statements like:

  • I’ve already talked about that with Caitlin.

  • I know what she’s going to say.

  • I need to be making more progress on this topic in order to be coached.

  • I’ve gone backward on this, so I’m not allowed to get more support.

Those thoughts can be the very thing that hinders us from getting on a call!

When my brain spits those thoughts up, I remind myself:

  • Of course, I’m getting coached again on the same topic.

  • Different versions of the same issues happen.

  • What if I don’t even have to “grow” in this area in order to receive support?

  • I don’t have to make progress in order to show up and be seen.

I use these thoughts often.

Then the brain will come up with the idea that a problem in my life is “taking too long:”

  • I can’t believe I’m still going through this.

  • Am I really still having emotions about this?!

  • No. I’m done with grief. No more.

Those thoughts hold me back and suppress me from accepting what is here.

Right now, I’m focused on asking for support to get through the holidays.

That’s okay. I’m dropping expectations of “what I could get done” before the end of the year.

I need support, healthy ways to comfort and soothe myself, and strategies to stay away from old patterns.

How are you supporting yourself through the rest of the year?
