Why did I create this Substack?
Hi, I’m Caitlin Faas, and my mission is to help high-achievers like myself find more sustainable tools so that they can face the fear, vulnerability, and uncertainty of their work setting.
I hold a Ph.D. in human development and family sciences, and although I’m an expert in my field — I am not here to tell you what to do. After being a tenured professor of psychology and department chair, I knew I wanted to keep exploring opportunities rather than stay in that structure. The more I experienced quality mentoring and coaching for myself, the more I wanted to assist others on their journey. I went on to coach thousands of clients one-on-one and in group settings. I learned how to ask better questions and empower people to find the answers within themselves. I wrote a workbook called Unstuck. After many years of being a “brain on a stick,” I learned the power of presence and became a meditation teacher. As you can see, I love to teach what I have learned along the way.
I used to call this Substack, “Joyful Growth.” But growth isn’t always joyful. It’s messy and complicated too. Growth doesn't always mean hustling or hurrying. We’re not striving to be “better versions” of ourselves because we learned our worth isn’t tied to achievement.
If you’ve read this far, you get it. I bet you too have realized that continuing to grow in adulthood is something to seek out. Around here, we call ourselves “life-long learners” and lean into uncomfortable experiences. We refuse to stay stuck or stagnant. We know there’s more to life beyond achievements and arrival moments.
Growing with Caitlin happens on live Zoom calls, through comments, and by answering thoughtful prompts.

Caitlin! Thanks for connecting. You suggested I tell you here who I am and what's lighting me up. Here are my answers!
I'm a retired higher ed admin (doctoral and faculty services), now building my business as an LCS-certified life coach. My offer at https://arthurpattonhock.com/ is a career coaching offer for humanists and historians, since there's so much drama about the job market these days. "What can I do with my PhD" is the question I help my clients answer. But honestly -- I'll talk to my ppl about anything on their minds -- love learning about what their researching, what their pain points are, etc.
What's lighting me up? I recently made a connection between "parts work" (not that I really know much about IFS except what you pick up on the street LOL) and the dance I see in myself and my clients between the unintentional and intentional models. When I first learned thought work I thought unintentional models = undesirable aka "bad." Not so! No bad parts, right?!? Curious what you think.
Thanks, Arthur
Caitlin - glad to have gotten connected with you. I look forward to hearing from you and will check out your prior posts in the coming weeks. I've a development junkie myself. I own a wealth management business in Boise Idaho, and write on Substack about money and meaning. My muse much prefers offering insights on meaning than money these days. We help our clients identify "their meaningful life and purpose" and then align their finances with that. If you're inclined - you can check out my missives at: https://onmoneyandmeaning.substack.com/. I look forward to learning from you.
