You’re right, it’s harder to set goals when we are in a state of crisis in our basic needs. A life challenge such as a divorce or long distance move is so disruptive because we have to set goals in so many areas at once.

And really for me, in states of crises, it's more about riding the waves of emotion and letting life unfold. But my brain protectively jumps in and says something like, "WE MUST PLAN THE FUTURE" as if we can gain control or overcome the feelings that way. Well, maybe that's not a time to set goals.

During my divorce process, I kept wanting to "get everything done" and push to have clarity. Now three years later, I look back and see how that was a coping mechanism. So much compassion for my younger selves!
