Before you laugh off this concern, stick around a minute.
Sometimes we might have a quiet internal voice say,
“if we delegate this task to someone else, they might do it better.”
It might also sound like, “what if someone starts to take over our job?”
“Or maybe our boss will think that person should have my job…”
Our brains can get carried away with threatening thoughts.
That’s normal!
Right now you might be dismissing the quiet voices rather than listening.
It’s easy to dismiss because you don’t usually feel threatened.
You probably even got your leadership level because most people don’t want to do it!
But when we dismiss the voice over and over, delegation doesn’t happen.
This is one of the reasons why you might have a hard time delegating.
So how can you deal with this issue?
Validate and listen to the internal part of you that raises the concern.
Just like you would to an actual team member that came to you.
Reassure the part that this task is a collective effort.
Hopefully, you’re in a workplace where it’s rewarded to be collaborative.
Remind yourself, that your value as a leader isn’t tied to YOU doing the task.
Helping the whole team do tasks is your job.
You’ll know it worked when you feel less tension and it’s easier to breathe.
Then there’s space for more delegation.
